IILM CMS Success Story: Suman Banerjee
A Dream of a Student
Wow it seems like a dream and I wish it never get over. Whenever we start a new phase in life, there is always a fear, lots of questions, a journey we are not much sure of but at IILM CMS it was different. I am Suman Banerjee, I am from West Bengal, as I got my first job today I am just wondering how to say I am feeling great, a package of 7 lpa just leaves me with a smile and all my memories of IILM CMS just starts rolling all over again. When I finished my B.Tech in IT I was not sure what to do next, some suggested me to go for a job and others suggested me to go for a higher degree in my field but then I decided to do MBA, not because it will guarantee me big money but because I wanted to learn how it feels to manage the unmanageable. To be honest IILM CMS was not among my top choices but now after two years I can proudly say yes I am part of IILM CMS community. It was more than just studies; it was about application, application of what we know and what we can achieve with little efforts. I have always believed money making is a hard task and its even harder to learn how to calculate it, interest rates, international business, currency exchange, these were the words which were enough to give me cold feet but as the time passed by things started looking lot easier, thanks mainly to my friends and teachers who showed confidence in me and trusted me to come through. Coming from the eastern part of India, I was very nervous at first place about the group of students I am going to meet and will the teachers be friendly to me but all those questions just remained within as few smiles around me changed the course of all my worries. I learnt a lot about myself during these two years, to be a leader you don’t need to be the top student or the most popular student of your class, you need to be more of yourself, and someone people can look upto not for help but to guide them through by holding them and letting them be more of what they are. We often say thanks to our creator for making us strong and stand through the toughest times, for my teachers over here, I just want to say you gave a new meaning to the purpose of my life. IILM CMS will be always my home as it’s the place where my heart belongs.
Thanks!!!!
Thanks IILM CMS for being my second home!!!

Lucky 13

Reeling from a sharp fall in GDP  to a free falling rupee to contraction in industrial output to fanning inflation, 2013 is surely going to be a challenging year for our macro economic managers as they sail from peak to troughs. The economic Calendar holds much promise for a swift turnaround in the Indian Business Climate.

January :
The Central Bank RBI has so far stayed firm despite huge pressure from the industry to slash interest rates to fuel growth. Amid signs of cooling prices, all eyes will be on Subbarao , Governor RBI to see what relief does he offer to India Inc as obliquely hinted by him in the October 30, 2012 mid quarter policy review.

February :
Finmin PC will present UPA’s last budget 2013-14 before they go for  Elections in 2014. On the brink of reforms, he’ll have to deal with challenging issues from fueling growth, reining subsidies, sprinkling populism to boost govt’s sagging political stock , bringing in Tax Reforms  (GST and DTC), allowing FDI in pensions..PC will be keenly watched by the industry captains and economists .

March :
RBI will come out with its mid quarter monetary policy which will create ripples in the stock markets as the sentiments of the Industry would be of the view to a further slash in interest rates. It will present RBI’s assessment of the Indian Economy.

April :
Indian banks will move to an effective , efficient and secure payment settlement system in which the cheques embedded with new features will only be accepted. So even though if you have loads of unused leaves, you will need to replace them.

May :
The official GDP numbers for 2012-13 will be released confirming signs of a crippling slowdown primarily due to a squeeze in the interest rates and counter effect on the investor sentiments.

June :
It marks the end of the deadline issued by SEBI for the companies to ensure a minimum public shareholding of 25 % in listed companies. Estimated to impact 200 companies, the mandate aims to raise a whopping 30,000 crore rupees through stake sales in a bid to comply with the regulations.

July :
It will decide the fate of the govt’s food guarantee programme. If the rain god plays spoilsport, it could be detrimental for the crops like paddy, oil seeds, sugarcane, cotton and pulses.

August :
Reflecting govt’s keenness to shrug off the dented policy paralysis , we can expect the parliaments monsoon session to be high on the reforms agenda on key areas.

September :
The powerful honchos of the world’s 20 richest nations representing around 90 % of the world’s income- G 20 will brainstorm at St. Peters burg  Russia for over 2 days on solutions to the problems afflicting the world economy.

October :
The govt. will announce its second quarter hand half-yearly results of growth in the industrial output which represents 17 % of India’s GDP.

November :
The festive season beginning with the auspicious Dhanteras to Diwali traditionally creates a surge in sales of consumer goods.Hope the festive season cheers up India Inc.

December :
A month that  levels the benchmark Sensex will scale by the end of 2013. Post a flood of reforms and positive sentiment created by the RBI’s rate cuts, India can expect a flood of FDI and FII.
Hope that 2013 lights up the growth momentum beyond 6%. The burden of expectations from the UPA is heavy. Only a strong spine of will can bring India back on its growth story !!
Wishing everybody especially our Macro Managers good luck this New Year 2013 ! :-)

STRESS MANAGEMENT

“Stress is a physical and psychological
reaction to issues and events
emanating from one’s environment.”
For all that talk of school being the “best time in your life”, one of the most difficult results of school is simple school stress. Of course, school stress is not only brought on by classes, homework, papers to write, problems to solve, and the persistent need to keep up with reading. It is also brought on by the often taxing work of keeping up with friends, keeping up with life, keeping the parents happy, and rather onerous task of simply being young
and trying to figure out what the heck you are going to do with the next, oh, 40 to 50 years of your life. Thus, it may very well be the best time in your life, but it is also one of the worst.

All stress isn’t bad. Stress can initiate change, help us focus on the task at hand, and in some cases even save our lives. Yet, when stress builds up, it can result in the opposites— and cause us to spin our wheels, keep us from concentrating, and cause bodily injury and even loss of life.
The first tip in managing stress is to recognize your stressors. The next step is to put each of them in their place. The following stress management tips, based on some old and some new adages, can help you do just that!
1.Watch out for signs of stress overload: Symptoms of too much stress can be physical, emotional, mental and behavioral. While everyone is different, some common signs are: memory problems, trouble concentrating, racing thoughts, irritability, anger, sadness, headaches, frequent colds and changes in sleep or appetite.
2.Using time management techniques: Student life is all about learning how to achieve a balance between studies and other activities. If you want to do well at school, you have to devote time to your studies. Although there are no easy ways to go about this, it helps to plan in advance and schedule time for study. You will soon find a method that works for you.
3.Organization techniques: There will be a number of things you will need to file, such as notes, assignments, submission dates and examination times. Keep a calendar or a notebook or whatever method works for you – but keep organized. Know what you have to do and when, so you don’t get behind at schoolwork.
4.Create a study environment: Ideally, you should choose a place that is quiet and free from distractions. Try not to study on your bed because you will tend to fall asleep even if you don’t intend to. A desk with good lighting works well for most people. If you have trouble getting in the mood, try dividing the task into small chunks and rewarding yourself after each is complete.
5.Memorization techniques: These can help you remember parts of your work that would otherwise be forgotten as soon as you did something else. Revising and reading over the previous class notes and assignments for five minutes before you start your work every day can also help you remember.
6.Be an Optimist: Do not let the little failures get you down. There will always be a time when you aren’t able to do too well on a particular test, or find yourself unable to be as good at one thing as you are at another. Recognise these as a necessary part of life and try not to make a big deal out of them. If you are cheerful, you will naturally feel better and less stressed.
7. Sleep Well: This is important, as many students today think they can get away with sleeping less. While this may be alright for one night, as a regular schedule it disturbs your health and sleep cycle. You will find it harder to concentrate and end up feeling more frustrated and stressed out about schoolwork.
8. Study Techniques: The conventional method of study may not work as well for you. If you remember and understand things better by experiments rather than reading about them in books, you should do these as much as possible. Remember, there is no one ‘correct’ way of studying.
9.Reach out:If you’re stressed out, talk to your friends and family. If you feel like you can’t handle the stress on your own, schedule an appointment with a counselor on campus
10. Be realistic: Pulling yourself in different directions will only stress you out, so try not to over-commit yourself or do extracurricular activities when you’re super busy with school.

Positive Attitude and Hardwork Pays

Positive Attitude and Hardwork Pays: Experience Sharing
- Tanay Kumar Pandey, Student, IILM

It was a jubilant feeling when I was selected for the post of analyst in The Smart Cube on 10th October, 2012. My life in IIL started on 11th May 2011 when I got admission and scholarship in this college. My session started in June 2012. It was really very tough for few months due to excess workload. Gradually, I became accustomed to late night study, assignments, projects, presentations and many more stuff. At the end of one year I was the second topper of PGDM and I was satisfied with my academic performance.
In May 2012, my SIP was scheduled to start. Many companies started coming for conducting interviews for management trainee. I got an opportunity to give interview in KPMG. I went to Gurgaon for the interview on scheduled date. I was quite confident of getting selected. I felt devastated when I was rejected by the HR in the 1st round only. I went to the HR and asked him politely to tell me about my shortcoming. I was stunned with his single line statement. “You have attitude problem”. I came to hostel and analysed that He was right and I had some problem which cannot make me employable.
I did my SIP in Irys Securities at Gurgaon. I had identified the problem in me and now it was the time to rectify and mend it. I did it successfully. After completing my SIP my main learning was “How to be polite?” It is very important to show employability skills at the time of interview. For final placement, I applied in The Smart cube. The profile was of analyst and the package offered by them was very lucrative. I had heard from seniors that from the last few years, no one cleared the quant round of The Smart cube. Our online aptitude test was scheduled on 6th October 2011 .at Gurgaon. I was quite excited to appear for this test because I was good in quant. I revised all the concepts once again. I searched for quant paper of The Smart cube in the internet. I refreshed my current affairs. I am a regular reader of The Economic Times. It helped me very much. It is advisable to all the first year students to read this newspaper every day. I can assure you that if you are a regular reader then your job is half done. I revised all the basic concept of Accountancy, Economics, Finance and Marketing too. Since it was a research profile, I also revised concepts of strategy and marketing research.
On the scheduled date of online test, I went to Gurgaon in the bus with 19 other students from our college. I revised all the basic formulae of Mathematics in the bus along with Avinash. Our test was scheduled at 11 AM. We reached test centre at 10 A.M. Due to some technical delay, our test started at around 12:15 PM. I had thought test to be of 20 minutes, as earlier was the process adopted by The Smart Cube. I was surprised to know that test will be of 2 hours. Anyway, I went for the test. There were four sections in the test. . It was not possible to go back to any question after that particular question was passed. So I had to plan it accordingly.
First Section was verbal ability and reading comprehension. Questions were pretty easy. 30 minutes were given to solve this section. Next was personality test. It was same like psychometric test. 80 questions were there and the time duration for this section was 20 minutes. It was quite simple to solve this within this time because questions were directly related to behavioural pattern followed by me.
Third section was quantitative ability. Questions were simple. Questions from percentage, average, number system, Time and work, Time speed and distance probability, permutation and combination were mainly asked. It was easy to complete in the stipulated time frame if the proper logic and shortcut methods were applied. Leaving out some questions and guessing some time consuming questions helped me to clear this section. Last section was Logical Reasoning. Questions were of moderate level. Some questions were tricky and time consuming. Preparing a proper framework helped me to clear this section.
After completing the test, I was quite satisfied with my performance. I came back to hostel at night. I got a mail that the result of the test will be announced on 10th October in Lodhi Road Campus. I prepared for interview till then. I solved around 50 guesstimates questions which were earlier asked in the smart Cube interview. I prepared a list of questions which can be asked from my resume. All the basic concepts were revised by me once again. I studied about the company and their work in detail.
On the D day, I went to lodhi road campus. Presentation about the company was going on at that time. After the presentation got over, results were announced. I was astonished to hear that only 9 students were able to clear the first round. My name was 4th in the list. I was exhilarated after hearing my name. I had to go to The Smart Cube office at 03:00 PM for interview round.
I reached The Smart Cube at around 02:45 PM. First round was just to check the communication skill. Questions were asked mainly from the resume. You must have explanation of everything written on the resume. It will be beneficial if you are able to justify the point written on the resume with examples. Next round was HR round. It lasted for around 25 minutes. The interviewers were trying to judge the resistance level of mine. They asked questions from euro zone crisis, CAPM model, and Dividend discount model, some basic concept of economics, concept and application of strategy. I was given the task of making BCG matrix of Tata group. We discussed about telecom, retail, packaged food, and apparel, pharmaceutical and cement industry. Comparative analysis of these industries was done by me in this round. At some point of time I went completely blank but panel was supportive and they gave me time to answer some questions using pen and paper.
Only 3 students were selected for final and technical round of interview. I went in for the last round of interview. I took a paper with me to solve the question related to guesstimates. I was asked to introduce myself once again. Around 5 guesstimates questions were asked. I was asked to estimate the size of retail market in India, Number of bisleri sold in Delhi every day, Number of disposable cups used in The Smart Cube everyday etc. Around one minute was given to solve each question. He asked me questions related to my SIP. One must be prepared with the questions related to SIP. He asked me to apply five forces model in Steel and Power Sector.  In the case of guesstimated questions they were not concerned about the correct answers. They wanted me to show the correct approach and framework to solve those questions. Presence of mind plays a key role in solving guesstimates questions. This round lasted for around 40 minutes. In this round, there was a rapid fire round in the end. Questions from current affairs were asked. Questions were pretty simple. Being a regular reader of The Economic Times helped me very much to clear this. Some of the questions related to current affairs are as follows:
# Who is the secretary general of UNO?
# Who is the chairman of Infosys? Tell about the recent acquisition done by this company.
# Governer of RBI ?
Questions were also from the key rates like SLR, Repo rate and reverse repo rate. Questions from recent economic reforms were also asked. I was quite satisfied with my performance in this round. After waiting for around 30 minutes, results were announced and I was selected for the post of analyst. It was jubilant feeling when I went to accept the letter and the cup given by them. It was very happy because I got the dream job. I was passionate about research work and I finally got what I had dreamed for.
I want to share few points which may be very much helpful to clear the selection process in any company.
* Be clear with your goal. Try to have all the information about the industry in which you want to build your future. It helps very much.
* Read newspaper every day. This is the key of getting success. Write your own analytical thoughts about key issues.
* Be clear with the basic concepts of Finance, Marketing, HR, Economics and Strategy.
* Make a list of questions which may be asked from the resume. Be ready with the best possible answers of them.
* Be in regular touch with the faculties of our college. Try to take feedback from them and work on shortcomings told by them.
* Try to be a team player. You can make your own group in hostel to have Group discussion on latest issues.
* Have a thorough understanding about the company and their work, before going for the interview.
* Never play blame game in college. It will distract you from your goal. College is doing its best for us.
I hope that the above mentioned points will help you to achieve your goal.
BEST OF LUCK !

It was finally after 6 grueling rounds, I heard the sweetest 4 words..."Congratulations !!! You are selected. "
This day would not have been possible without the support of my parents, my sister and especially my mama. It is by inculcating their morales and values that I am the person that everybody see today.
It would be very much unfair if I don't mention the help and support that I get from my friends. I am sometimes really amazed to see their confidence in me. Whenever I
get depressed because of some reason, they always help me to see the brighter side of life and make me feel better.
I am also thankful to all the teachers of my life who have educated me everyday. It is by listening to their valuable lectures and suggestions that I get inspiration to do something good with my career.
I am thankful to all the persons who came in my life and helped me to get better. I will always look forward to their wisdom and values.
I want to thank God for always giving me the strength to do the correct thing and guiding me to take the correct path in my life.
Thank you all and for Shoppers Stop.....thanks for considering me worthwile...
